Day 7 – Tour Eiffel
(I’ve joined Kate Motaung’s October challenge and decided to focus most of my 31 days of five-minute writing on favorite travel pictures. I am yearning to travel again but it’s just not possible now, so this is the next best thing.)
I miss the Eiffel Tower. I miss sitting on the steps of the Trocadero eating a crepe filled with vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce and watching the Tower lights blink every hour. I miss taking the metro to the hill, turning the corner, and gasping as I see the Tower. I even miss waiting in a long line to go up the Tower and look out over the 360 degree view of the most beautiful city in the world. And I miss Paris.
One of the times we were there was New Year’s Eve 2000, the millennium in Paris. It was my dream to be in the crowd, to walk up the Champs Elysees past all of the lighted ferris wheels toward the Arc du Triomphe, to go to the Tour Eiffel at midnight and see it explode brilliantly in magical blinking lights, and to watch the fireworks race up all sides of the tower.
I want to go back again. The last time I was there was seven years ago, on the way back home from a trip to the Dordogne region with three girlfriends. We had three days visiting our favorite places — not long enough to be in Paris.
